ACTORS - TARGETS - PARTNERS
The BALTIC SEA FOUNDATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT (in brief: BALTIC SEA FOUNDATION) has been erected by seven individuals.
Most of them possess Estonian nationality. Oner is a Swedish citizen with Estonian family roots. Another (the person responsible for this web-site) is a German stemming from a family which formerey had its home at the Easteren rim of the Baltic Sea; the latter came to Estonia in connection with the political changes during the last decade of the past century.
The foundation addresses its fields of action – environmental and regional development – in the respective civic, social and economic contexts.
This means close and permanent co-operation with the regional countries and ist peoples, as well as with public and private authorities, not only with those in Estonia but with all around the Baltic Sea, including those institutions which influence the Baltic Sea region, among them, above all, the bodies of the European Union.
The founders are convinced that sustainable progress for the common weal only can be reached by decided engagement of the citizens of the Baltic Sea countries themselves – old and new EU countries, as well as those of the neighbours beryond the EU frontiers. Financial support may help but it must and cannot substitute own efforts.
The promoter of the foundation is Juergen Lewerenz, actzually the head of its governing council, who voluntarily provides the foundation with his professional experience in banking and monetary affairs, as well as that from development aid and the reconstruction of formeerly Soviet governed so-called reform countries. He worked as a civil servant in the respective German State agencies and also, for years, as field adviser for co-operatives in Latin America.
He has close ties with the Baltic regiion since his job as EU advsisor (1992-1003) for the Estonian central bank (Eesti Pank). Besides his specific EU mandate, he helped to design and to introduce the new Estonian currency which accelerated all necessary economic reforms.
The tasks of the foundation are challenging and they will require much time. Therefore, the institution needs committed collaborators who are willing to offer their services over a long period and to accept sacrifice. Especially individuals from the so-called old EU countries are envisaged.
The financiual basis of the Baltic Sea Foundatioin is still modest because its founders were only able to contribute small funds.
Alshough personal collaboration is highest ranking, donations are very welcome.
The foundation is a solid platform for community oriented activities of reliable bodies which do not contradict its orientation.
